The Mississippi Nursery and Landscape Association offers the opportunity to award three scholarships during each year to horticulture students; MNLA Endowment Denny Phillips, the Howell Memorial Scholarship and the Walter E. Davis Scholarship .
Howell Memorial Scholarship 2012 Application
The Howell Memorial Scholarship is a $1,000.00 scholarship. Applications are accepted August 1 – October 31 of each year. In July of 2002, the Mississippi Nursery and Landscape Association, Inc., established the Mississippi Nursery and Landscape Association Howell Memorial Endowed Scholarship Fund at Mississippi State University, in memory of Owen and Lee Cody Howell and in honor of Connie Howell. This is an endowed scholarship which memorializes Owen and Lee, father and son nurserymen of George County Mississippi. The Howell’s were very influential in establishing the “Green Industry” of Mississippi and also very supportive of Mississippi State University.Qualifications
Candidates for the Mississippi Nursery and Landscape Association Howell Memorial Endowed Scholarship Fund must:- Be full-time students at Mississippi State University enrolled in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.
- Be a junior or above majoring in Floriculture or Ornamental Horticulture or related field in the Division of Agriculture and Life Sciences.
- Have demonstrated academic achievement, a minimum of 2.5 GPA based on a 4.0 system.
- Be of good moral character and have demonstrated leadership ability and financial need.
Selection
The Mississippi Nursery and Landscape Association, Inc., Scholarship Selection Committee administers the scholarship program. The applicants will be reviewed by the Mississippi Nursery and Landscape Association, Inc. Scholarship Committee, which will be responsible for selecting the recipient. The scholarship will be awarded on a year-to-year basis. A student who is the recipient one-year is eligible for consideration in any other year; however, they must comply with the selection criteria. The Mississippi Nursery and Landscape Association, Inc. established the "Walter E. Davis Scholarship" in appreciation and honor of the retired executive secretary/treasurer, Walter E. Davis. The Walter E. Davis Scholarship is a $1,000 scholarship awarded to a sophomore student majoring in Ornamental Horticulture or a related field, and is a full time student enrolled at one of Mississippi's community colleges. The Walter E. Davis Scholarship Fund does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, sex, handicap or veteran status. When applying for this scholarship the applicant must include a cover letter explaining experience, how they became interested in horticulture, plans following graduation and how they would benefit from this scholarship. A resume, official transcripts and two recommendation letters from college instructors should also be attached.Selection

In March of 1994 MNLA established the Denny Phillips Endowed Scholarship Fund at Mississippi State University, in memory of Travis D. Phillips, Jr. This is an endowed scholarship which memorialized Travis D. “Denny” Phillips, Jr. An Oktibbeha county native, Mr. Phillips was the president of Phillips Garden Center and a landscape architect. He received degrees in landscape architecture and landscape contracting from MSU and was on the board of directors of the Mississippi Nurseryman’s Association.Qualifications
